Investing in the United States in 2026: why it works (and when it doesn't)

“Francesco, is it really worth moving and investing in the United States?” A lot of people ask me this, usually with their eyes lit up by the American dream. My answer is honest: yes, the opportunities are real, but it is not for everyone and it is not automatic.

I am Francesco Ponticelli, Business Broker and REALTOR® license FL #3590963. I have lived in Miami since 2019 and I have been following this city since 2003. I work in Florida and I guide entrepreneurs, many of them Italian, who invest in the United States. I have seen people change their life for the better, and people burn their savings because they started unprepared.

In this article I explain why the American market is still a real opportunity in 2026, and also when it is better to stop and think. No dreams for sale, feet on the ground.

The short answer

Why invest in the United States? Because of a huge and dynamic market, a culture that favours business, the strength of the dollar, and in Florida no state income tax on individuals. For Europeans, Miami also offers a community and direct connections with Europe. But the opportunity turns into a result only if you arrive prepared: numbers in hand, a business that suits you, and the right professionals beside you.

The real reasons investing in the United States pays off

Some advantages are concrete, not slogans:

  • Market size: hundreds of millions of consumers, with a higher propensity to spend than in Europe.
  • Business culture: opening and running a business is leaner, and failure carries less stigma.
  • Florida taxation: no state income tax on individuals.
  • The dollar and the strength of the U.S. economy.
  • For Italians: in Miami, a community, the Spanish language, a Latin and European melting pot, and direct flights to Europe.

When it does NOT make sense (the part few people mention)

The American market rewards those who are prepared and punishes those who improvise. It is not worth starting if: you do not have enough capital to cover the first difficult months, you want to enter a sector you do not know while counting on “learning as you go”, or you think that “in America everything is easier”. Competition is high, costs in Miami are real, and the newcomer is usually the first one to get caught out by hidden costs.

Uncomfortable truth: the “American dream” sold as a package is the most expensive trap of all. Anyone promising you easy profits, guaranteed visas or miracle franchises is selling to you, not building with you. The opportunity is real; the shortcuts are not always.

Sector opportunities in Miami

For anyone arriving with a solid plan, what works well in Miami and in Florida is quality food service with a clear concept, services to people and businesses, specialised retail, and everything that revolves around the real estate market (design, furniture, architecture and so on). The question is not “which sector makes the most money”, but which sector you know how to make work, with the right numbers, in the right area.

Case study: the one who prepared vs the one who improvised

Busy commercial street in Miami

Scenario based on recurring situations. Names and figures changed for privacy.

Elena arrived with a plan: capital that also covered the difficult months, a business in her own sector, and the right professionals. Two years on the business is running and she is already thinking about the next step. Another client, on the other hand, had rushed into a sector he did not know, undercapitalised, convinced that “in Miami it is easy”. He closed within a year. Same market, two different levels of preparation, two opposite outcomes.

“The American market gives you nothing for free. But to those who arrive prepared it offers possibilities I did not have in Europe.”

Mistakes I see people make

1. Starting undercapitalised. You need money for the difficult months too. I will never get tired of repeating it: this is the single most important point.

2. Believing that “in America everything is easy”. It rewards those who are prepared.

3. Entering unfamiliar sectors with no support.

4. Trusting people who sell dreams and shortcuts.

5. Not surrounding yourself with the right professionals. A lawyer, a CPA (the accountant here in the United States) and a broker are worth more than they cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you need to start investing in the United States?
It depends on the business, but underestimating the capital needed for the first months is the most common mistake. Better to start with a margin.

Do I have to move there?
Not to invest; yes if you want to run it yourself, and in that case you need a suitable visa (often the E-2).

Is Florida the best choice?
For many Europeans yes, for taxation, community and connections. But it depends on the plan.

Is it risky?
Like any business. The risk goes down with preparation, real numbers and the right professionals.
